propagation of shrubs and rose of sharon bush

Question
Hi Tom!

Just wondering if you have ever propagated cuttings from either Rose of Sharon Bush vine cuttings or arbovitae bushes. Is it possible to propagate either from existing vines and bushes?  How can this be done?  Thank you very much for any advice,
Marilyn

Answer
Hi Marilyn,
Thanx for your question.  I've never propated cuttings of either Rose of Sharon or arborvitae.  Rose of Sharon is easily propagated from seeds.  To propagated either one of these select new (green) wood and strip the cuttings of their leaves up to the top of the cutting.  Cut the cutting off where it meets the main branch and dip this in rooting hormone like Rootone.  Plant the cutting in damp (not soggy) potting soil about 2 inches deep.  Make sure the bottom stays warm (around 75 degrees F).  Keep the cuttings misted or place them inside a large, clear plastic baggie to maintain humidity.  It will take at least 8 weeks for any rooting to begin.  You can check periodically after 8 weeks by digging gently next to the cutting with a pencil.  The roots will be like white threads.  Make sure there is a good network of them before you gently dig the cutting out of the growing medium and plant it in a separate pot.  Do not put the plant outside if you are anticipating frost conditions.  The potted plant should be placed in an area that is free from rain, wind, sun and extremes in temperature for around 10 days and then you can plant it in direct sun wherever you like.  I hope this helps.
Tom
