eucalyptus and cocks combs

Question
I was wondering in you could root tone eucalyptus cuttings. If so how? Also, can you cross pollinate cockscombs?

Answer
Hi Jackie,
Thanx for your questions.  To root eucalyptus cuttings take 4 inch hard wood cuttings in the spring or early summer.  Strip all but the last couple of leaves of the cutting.  Dip the cutting in a rooting hormone.  Stick the cutting in planter of wet sand.  Make sure the cuttings don't touch each other.  Put the planter inside a large, clear, plastic bag and seal it to maintain humidity.  Keep it warm but don't put it in the sun as that will "cook" it.  Keep the sand moist.  Rooting should occur in 4-10 weeks.  When new leaves begin to form, take the plastic off.  Transplant cuttings to separate potts after significant leaf growth.

As for the cockscombs, yes they can cross-pollinate.  That's how the nurseries come up with the hybrids.  You can experiment and see what you come up with.  I hope this helps.
Tom
