more cherry tree propagation

Question
i bought some queen anne cherries ( i think they are also called
mt. rainier) at my local farmers market. do you think these are
hybridized? i realize this is probably a ridiculously generalized
question. anyhoo, i was going to try propagating the pits. can i
do this by placing the pits alone(no soil) in the fridge or
preferably freezer?  thanx in advance for your input.

Answer
Hi Glenn,
Thanx for your question.  Your Queen Anne cherries are hybrids.  The pits you start will result in plants that probably never resemble the plants that resulted in the cherries you enjoyed from your farmers market.  Also, it will take 5-7 years to get fruit.  So, if you still want to do it.  Plant the pits in pots now about 1 inch deep and keep them watered but not soggy.  Leave out doors for the autumn and winter because they need a cold period to break the dormancy.  In the spring, they will sprout and you will have new trees.  You can also place the pits in a wet paper towel and put it inside a plastic baggie, seal it and place it in the fridge for 90 days (not the freezer).  Plant the pits in a pot about 1 inch deep and keep warm 70-75 degrees F.  They will sprout in 30-180 days.  If they don't all come up you may have to put the pot in the fridge for another 60 days and go through the process again.  It works better if you leave the pot outdoors for the winter.  I hope this helps.
Tom
