growing cherry tree from pits


Question
In a garden centre today buying plants noticed a small tree/shrub with red cherry like fruits took some fruits home and split them the pits are round brown and small thint it it a barbados cherry not sure. can I grow from the pits if possible how. Sorry I cannot be more explicite.

Hi Wally,
Thanx for your question.  You should be able to grow most fruit seed as long as the fruit has been allowed to sufficiently ripen.  If it is a real cherry, you will probably need to chill the seed for 60-90 days to break dormancy.  Place the seed in a damp paper towel and place in a plastic baggie and seal.  Place in the fridge for 60-90 and then plant 2.5 cm deep in a pot of potting soil.  Keep moist and warm and it should germinate in 30 days or less.  Tropical and sub-tropical fruit seeds do not require this kind of treatment and can be directly sown in the potting soil.  I hope this helps.  If not, please feel free to ask more questions.
