Hybiscus

Question
I recently planted a hibiscus in my front flower bed.. I live in Michigan its very cold in the winter.. ok  Do i cut down my hibiscus to the ground?

Answer
Hi Patti,
Thanx for your question.  What type of hibiscus do you have?  There are tropical hibiscus shrubs in yellow, red, white and pink that are sold as potted plants.  These plants are not hardy in Michigan or most of the US.  One has to treat these plants as potted plants.  Bring them indoors when winter approaches.  Hardy hibiscus on the other hand, and we have them down here in Kansas will survive terrible winters and are easily started from seed.  Hardy hibiscus shrubs can be cut down to a few inches above the ground after Halloween.  I hope this helps.
Tom
