whats bugging my hibiscus ?

Question
Help! Young robust plants, bedded several months
are under attack. Many yellow leaves-almost defoliated. Green leaves munched at night. All plants continue to bloom and have been fed but look spindly.
Used Sevin. No change. Used malathion. The
problem got worse. Used snail bait (pellets). Seemed to slow down, then picked back up. Also used spray
powder recc'd at nursery. No visible change.
Healthy leaves continue to show cuts thru the
middle where sometning chomped through.
     Any ideas? Severe infestion, perhaps?
Soil fumigation recc'd? If so, how and what to use?

Answer
you didn't mention where you live. i'm in southern NJ. i use to live in FL. many hibiscus used as outdoor landscape plants.
are they in full sun, partial shade, or mostly shade?
look on the under side for signs of egg cases , larval stages, and adults. get to a local garden center/nursery that is familiar w/ plants in your area. may have to visit more than one to find someone knowledgeable. don't over fertilize. could be watering too often or not enough. quiz them on hibiscus care, buy your products from them, and they should be happy to help you solve the problem. ask them about using orthene(systemic acting pesticide)or dormant volck refined oil(smothers eggs if applied before new growth starts for the season.
hope this info helps.
