Hybiscus Plants

Question
I have two plants in planters that I need to store for the winter.  I live in Kansas City, KS.  I do not want to loose them because they are the last thing my husband who passed away in August and I purchased together for our back patio.  I can not just bring them inside because I have two house cats and one small dog.  Please HELP!

Answer
Hi Sandi,
Thanx for your question.  First, allow me to extend my condolences to you on the loss of your husband.  Second, I'm in KCK too so it's good to hear from a neighbor.  Ok, you can bring the plants in and protect them from the dog and cats.  We use duct tape across the pot so it makes a lattice-like pattern.  You can still water but the animals find it unpleasant to try to tackle so they can use the pots as a place to dig or as a litterbox.  I have found this method to be most effective.  Another thing you can do is put the plants in the basement and put a 40-watt shop light above them, keeping it on for at least 8 hours a day.  You can find the shoplights at Walmart or DIYs for about $15.  I hope this helps.
Tom
