Loquat Seeds

Question
Hi Tom... I recently was in Florida and had the oppurtunity to pick loquats. Fascinated by their seeds I had hoped I could perhaps sprout them, not necessarily into a tree-- but maybe a small plant or something ? I live in Indiana currently so I don't know if the climate is suitable. I'd love your advice.

Answer
Hi Leah,
Thanx for your question.  Loquat are hardy to zone 7 but not hardy in Indiana.  You can try to grow them as a potted shrub.  I've done this with avocado and citrus.  Go ahead and try it.  The tree will look shabby in the dark of winter as it goes somewhat dormant due to our low sunlight in the Midwest during the winter.  Remove the covering around the seed and plant it in a pot of good potting soil, moist but not soggy.  Keep it warm 70-80 degrees F.  Sprouting should occur within 10 days or 2 weeks.  Wait until the seedlings have their first set of true leaves before pricking them out and planting in separate pots.  After the danger of last frost, place the potted seedlings outdoors in a place that is shaded and sheltered for 10 days.  Then you can plant them in larger pots.  I hope this helps.
