Cypress Tree Seeds / Cedar Seeds too

Question
Hi, thank you for being online to hopefully answer my questions!
I live in the Houston area and I would like to know how to grow a Cypress Tree from seed, which I have many.
Also, I'd like to know when to plant Cedar tree sees too.
I love doing these kinds of things but I'm new on the tree seeds. When & how exactly do I do this? Inside or outside & what time of the year?
Please email me back, I'd certainly appreciate it!
P.S. Also there may be a chance I move to North Carolina or the Dallas Texas area. Not sure of which at this point.
I will be taking these trees with me where ever I move.
Thank you very much,
Jo Ann

Answer
Hi JoAnn,
Thanx for your question.  Sorry it took so long to get back to you.  Cypress and cedar seeds both require a cold treatment to break dormancy.  Seeds can be wrapped in a damp paper towel and sealed inside a plastic baggie.  Place baggie in the fridge for 90 days.  Then plant cypress seeds in damp soil (do not allow the soil to dry out, keep it damp) and warm (about 70-75 F).  Cedar seeds can be planted in moist but not soggy potting soil and exposed to same temps.  It will take some time for germination and the germination will be erratic.  If you are planning on moving, plant seedlings in separate pots and do not transplant outdoors until seedlings are sturdy and have several sets of leaves.  I hope this helps.
Tom
