Starting a yukka plant

Question
Can and how do you start a yukka plant? Ours grew seeds on the stock after it flowered. Can you plant them and will they grow?

Answer
Hi Vickie,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, the yucca seeds are located inside the capsules that are found after blooming has finished.  Allow the capsules to ripen and begin to open.  You'll find the seeds inside and they are black and like small chips.  Plant them in a pot pressed into the soil and lightly covered with soil.  Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.  They will germinate in 2-4 weeks.  They will look like grass at first.  It's a little late in the season to be starting them so I would wait until January to start them.  After seeds have germinated, and the seedlings are a couple of inches tall, after the last frost, put the pot outdoors in the shade for 10 days.  Then, plant your seedlings in full sun.  They will grow fast but it can take 2-7 years depending upon the variety for yucca to bloom.  I hope this helps.
Tom
