Frangiapanis

Question
I have a Frangiapani plant( Hawaiian flower) The guy that I bought it from said That I need a 10-50-10 cactus fertilizer for it.Do you know where I can find it? He said to follow the directions on it Mixing it with water and put one cup on the soil around the plant every 2 weeks. Can you help me?

Answer
Oh, sheeesh, a 'cactus' fertilizer!  Relax, Paula.  I've grown lots of these, and he should never have put you in panic mode with those words.

First, NO ONE needs a 10-50-10.  Not unless your plant is on drugs.  I think Marijuana growers use it to generate THC in the leaves or something.  Frangipani -- also called Plumeria -- come from the volcanic Hawaii, where they use these to make leis.  Do you see a lot of cactus in Hawaii?  Maybe the guy went to Bonaire, thought he was in Hawaii.  Who knows.  Ignore the Cactus advice.  They need excellent drainage, and are easy to overwater, but these are not Cactus plants.

they go dormant, they need a rest period, and they are ugly as sin in that state.  Tea Roses have a reputation for ugliness when not in bloom.  Frangipanis exceed all expectations in the Ugliness Department.  And they have every right to -- there is nothing like standing in a room with a Frangipani.

But there was a reason we named out first Frangipani 'the P$^#S Plant' when I bought my first cutting at the New York Flower Show one winter afternoon.  It sat motionless, dormant, this 6 inch erect P#*&S in a Clay Pot with soil in a window.  A year later, sprouts appeared at its head.  Vandals dispensed with it soon after and I replaced it with a larger specimen that came with its own leaves, roots, and a price to match.  These are easy to find if you know where to look.

Piece of cake.  You're going to love this plant.
