Japanese Peony

Question
Can these be started from seed?  Should the seed pods be allowed to dry up and open or be sniped off as soon as they start to form the pod?

Thank You

Answer
Hi Linda,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, peonies can be started from seed if they set seed.  This is they way hybridizers bring us new varieties.

I posted this answer back in July of this year.  If you will use the Browse Answers function at the top of the page, you can sometimes get a quicker answer.

With that said, here is the answer.

Take the seeds and plant them in a pot of potting soil about 1/2 inch deep and keep them warm for 3 months.  The roots will grow first but you won't see any green growth.  Seal the pots inside a plastic baggie to maintain humidity.  Do not put in sunlight or this will fry them.  After the 3 months, place in a cool place that is above freezing but cold.  I would suggest sealed in the bag and placed in the fridge.  Leave in the fridge for about 3 months.  After that, put back in a warm place the seedlings should begin to emerge.  I hope this helps.

Tom
