rowan/ mountain ash

Question
hi tom i am sorry to trouble you i purchased a mountain ash 3 years ago as a memorial for my nan i have it in alarge planter in my garden as we only have a small plot and my nan loved the birds in the garden and i knew that this tree would encourage them into mine as a reminder of of my nan anyway at the beginning of the year the tree had plenty of fresh berries and luchious green foliage and now the leaves have all died off and any new shoots have also died and some of the branches have began to weaken and look as if they are dying what can i do to save my tree from any further damage

Answer
Hi Carrie-Ann,
Thanx for your question.  Make sure your planter gets plenty of sun and that you are watering the planter regularly.  The planter should also drain freely so that water is not standing in the bottom.  Apply some well-composted manure in spring and mid-summer or apply a balanced 12-12-12 fertilizer (following directions on the package).  Keep the tree pruned so that it doesn't grow too large for the container.  I hope this helps.
Tom
