Peach Seed Sprouting

Question
Hi Tim, I have a seed that came out of the pit of a peach I had eaten so I got some cotton and dampened the cotton with seed inside, placed inside a zip loc baggie and onto my sunny window seal. The seed is sprouting very nicely. how long should I keep the seed inside the baggie and cotton? What shall I do next with this sprouting seedling?  Thank you

Answer
Hi Maureen,
Thanx for your question.  I would take the sprout and gently plant it in a pot large enough to comfortable accommodate it without bending or breaking anything.  Plant it so the sprout is two or three inches deep inside the pot.  Water it and then wait for it to sprout.  You're at a bit of a disadvantage of having this seed sprout so late in the season.  You'll need to allow the seedling to go dormant when the rest of the trees start going dormant and dropping their leaves.  If you have a cold basement or unheated garage or shed, I would shelter the seedling in its pot here where it will be protected from the cold north wind.  Water it once a week to keep it from drying out.  Then, next season, after the last frost, plant it out in full sun.  I hope this helps.
Tom
