Growing White Oaks

Question
I planted a number of white oak acorns from my yard in pots in my house.  Many are now tiny seedlings and it seems that they should now be re-planted in individual pots.  I read that the tap root is very long but the other roots don't extend too far horizontally.  So I wonder, what size container should I use to re-plant the seedlings?  Should I use a peat pot or plastic?

Thank you.

Will

Answer
Hi Will,
Thanx for your question.  Oaks do have a long taproot.  You need to plant your white oaks in separate pots.  I would use plastic and then place the plants in a cold garage or some place protected outside.  The seedlings need to go dormant for the winter.  Just keep them out of the direct contact of the north wind...that's why a cold garage is best.  You can keep them outside in direct sun for now and then once you start getting hard frosts, take them to an unheated garage, greenhouse, shed, etc. I would plant the seedlings in 6 or 8 inch pots.  I hope this helps.
Tom
