Unavoidable change for African violets

Question
Hello, Kristina,
My office had strong southeast sun exposure and big windows with solar film on them. My African violets absolutely loved that window and really thrived. Unfortunately, I was laid off and had to take my babies home. I put them in the brightest area I had, but they are not adapting well. They're dropping leaves often, although I have been able to root the dropped leaves.

I'd appreciate any help on what to do to help them. One was particularly magnificent--more than 8 inches high and probably 10 inches across. It's the one suffering the most.

Thanks for your help,
Bonnie Earnhardt

Answer
Ok a East facing window is the best exposure for them.  Make sure they do not get direct sun on the leaves for a long period of time.  This will cause the plant to burn.

Next could be humidity.  Set the plant on a bed of pea gravel with water.  Do not let the pot sit in the water.  Just above it will be perfect.  This keeps the plants micro climate humid.

Pot size...it should be 1/3 the size of the plant.  These unlike other house plants like to be rootbound and do best when they are.

Water only when they feel dry to the touch with 1/4 of what the directions say with fertlizer.  High nitrogen would be good right now.  I recommend fish emulsion.  The plants love it.

If the leaves are yellowing you need to repot in fresh mix.

Did I cover everyhthing?

Please let me know if I can help you further.

Happy Growing
Kristina
