ivory spots on African violet plant

Question
QUESTION: I just read a question that Brenda asked about white spots and your answer but I don't believe my problem is the same because it doesn't look like mildew.  It's almost like the green color in the leaves is being taken over by ivory/pink color spots.  It is starting at the tip of the leaf and works its way to the stem. New leaves look fine for now.  I have them in a southwest window because I get no sun on the east side to keep them there.  Being winter time the temperature is around 70 F

ANSWER: Carolyn,
See if you can send me a photo. If not, I'll study it further and try to help. Sometimes a photo is worth a thousand words, esp with plant illnesses.

QUESTION: Patricia,

I've taken a picture of my African violet with the spots on it but I don't have your e-mail address to upload and send to you.   Thanks,
Carolyn

Answer
So glad you sent the photo. I have had violets with similar looking spots on them. They are caused by cold, either water which is too cold or by a draft from a cold window. You said you had it in a SW window, so that is probably it. In any case, I'm happy to tell you it is not dangerous to the violet. You will notice that the new, baby leaves are healthy looking. The plant just needs to be a little warmer right now. If a sunny window is not available, then put a plastic bag over the plant for a few days. That will raise the temperature in the plant, and also increase the humidity greatly. This will not reverse the spotting; these leaves are spotted for good now. It will just improve the overall health of the plant. I'm happy to say, though, that it is nothing serious. I don't get to say that often!
