african violet

Question
Patricia,
I have had this african violet for about 12 years.  I water it about once a week from the bottom, I fertilize it every now and then, and it sits in front a west window.  It has bloomed periodically over the last several years.  Recently it bloomed more than I have ever seen with 20+ blooms at a time, and continued to flower for about 3 months.  The blooms were all different shades of pink as they have been in the past.  Two or three months after the blooms died off, it has bloomed again.  This time all of the flowers are white.  Is this color change normal?
Thanks for your time.  I love forward to your answer.
Marcia

Answer
Marcia,
It would take a true horticulturist to explain, or even to understand the reasoning behind your multicolored violets. All I can say is MAZEL TOV! Congratulations- you have a hybrid which is manifesting its genetics by showing different colors from time to time. I have one that did that about a year ago, but it only changed color once. Sounds like your violet is a good, strong specimen. I would actually recommend you contact your local African Violet Society and consider entering it into a show. And, 12 years is a long time to have such a healthy, successful plant. I wonder if a West window is best for it, particularly in summer months. But, if it's not broke, don't fix it! By the way, to help you find a local society for violets, here's the website. And, let me know if you enter it, and what happens! here's the website:
