moon plant/vine

Question
Dear Ms. Franklin:Moon plant planted in May when very tiny now is 7 feet tall and loaded with leaves but no flowers or buds.. Had fed once with plant food and once with plant food for flowering plants. Receives good sun at least 8 hours.  Bottom leaves have some type of white patches on leaves not widespread at this time.  Philadelphia PA area. Planted near a clematis newly planted in spring and has exactly one bud.

How can I get this to flower?  Thank you so much if you can  help me.  Madeleine Bowen

Answer
Greetings! First of all, I am assuming that you have moon vine (Ipomea) and not moon flower (Datura).  The latter also has a white bloom, but it has (IMHO) an awful frangrance.  So, working on the assumption that you have a moon vine, which is in the same family (Convolvulaceae) as Morning Glory, here are some thoughts about your situation.  It's important to check the moon vine at night (after dusk) because that's when the flowers open.  Many people think their vines don't have flowers when, in fact, the show takes place in the evening! A balanced fertilizer works best  -- 20-20-20 -- equal parts Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), and Potassium (K), but if you have lush foliage and no blooms, then that suggests that there is too much nitrogen in your soil and not enough phosphorus.  Interestingly, I've had good luck with rose fertilizer, and you might give that a whirl.  Rose fertilizer has enough phosphorous to jump-start the flowering process, and you might try using about double the amount recommended for roses.  It sounds like the vine is getting enough sun - a minimum of 8 hrs. of direct sunlight daily is key.  The white patches on the bottom leaves is likely powdery mildew #the bane of lilacs and peonies) and that's caused by heat/humidity and not enough air circulation.  I would just take off those leaves, as it won't hurt the vine.  I hope this is helpful, and I wish you luck!
