which tropical plants are right for me

Question
Hello I am interested in having some plants in my home I receive light from the Northwest and it is indirect sunlight. Something low maintenance but is also aestically pleasing to look at. It would be nice to have a couple of tropical plants but if I can't I would like to know what plants would be good. I am really in love with the Maidenfern plant but I know it is delicate, it would be great to have it though with accurate care instructions I'm sure it will stay alive. Thank you Cara

Answer
Hello Cara,

If you really want a maidenhair fern then by all means try one. They will do well in a NW window as long as it doesn't receive any hot afternoon sun. They must also be kept moist at all times. If they dry out they will die. Fertilize every month or so with an organic fertilizer like fish emulsion (they sell it in garden centers). It's a good idea to take your fern to the kitchen sink every two weeks and give it a warm spray to dislodge any insects that might hiding and to remove any dust. To keep humidity high, place your fern on a saucer filled with stones or gravel. Keep the saucer filled with water at all times but don't let the water touch the bottom of the pot.

Some other options are chinese evergreen, peace lily, dracaena "Janet Craig" and pothos. All of these are moderate light plants, easy care and fairly tough. Once you decide on a particular plant, let me know and I will give you specific care instructions.
