How do I split a Cordyline Australis

Question
I have a Cordyline Australis which is about 6 or 7 feet tall but the leaves at the top are only about 1 foot long.  There is another tree growing from the base of this which is 5 to 6 feet tall but is all leaves.  Assuming this is an offshoot of the original one, can it be separated without killing both or either tree.

Answer
Hi Brenda, yes! you can sever it and actually trim back the leaves from the severed one and start a new tree; put it in a pot with moist soil and place it in the shade, it will take awhile, but roots will form and you have yourself a new Dracaena. The original will not be hurt at all, as long as you cut the offshoot devoid of the mothers trunk. regards Nick
