Indoor Elephant Ear (Brown Leaves)

Question

My Elephant Ear
I have a beautiful elephant ear indoor grown from a small plant, now large. I
water it regularly, and it's direct path to a large loft window, however the leaves
have started to turn brown on the ends, and drop brown water.  Any idea what's
going on here?  Too much water? I'd hate to lose this plant, it's one of my
favorites. Thanks for your help.  I've attached a photo.

Answer
Jonathon,

This plant likes lots of sun. There are several things that could be causing your brown leaves. One is lack of light, this plant loves the sun and is usually grown outdoors in full sun. Two is not enough water, this plant is grown in swampy areas in nature, it likes to be constantly moist in the spring and summer months. Three is the plant goes thru dormant periods usually during the winter months, because your plant has been gorwing indoors you have not allowed it a dormant period and it may now be choosing it's own dormant period. If it continues to brown and you try increasing the light and the leaves continue dieing back and there is stem collapse then cut off the water and let the plant go dry and put it in storage in a dark closet for a 2-3 month rest period then bring it  back out in the light but only water very lightly until the bulb shows signs of new growth. Too much water could rot the tuber. Once you see growth water as you have and fertilize regularly and enjoy you plant. Just do be aware that they do need an occasional rest and they will let you know when they do like I suspect yours is now, but try more light first. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
