Bird of Paradise unwell and infested

Question
Hi
I'm in the UK, and I've been growing a BOP - its about 4 foot tall now and in my kitchen.  Recently one leaf started to thurn a mottled brown colour, and then today I noticed another one had too.  On a closer inspection, the soil had loads of crawling bugs - they're not ants, but they are slightly smaller.  Can anyone tell me if I can fix this, or is my BOP dying?
Thanks

Answer
Amie, the only thing to do at this point is change out the medium, I am not sure what type of insect you are dealing with, but it is academic, if there are insects, there are eggs and they are hatching out in the soil; change the soil after sterilizing the container, wash the root ball of the Bird too! there could be eggs attached to the roots. The bird should come back with healthy growth from the emerging leaves, but it will take time, so be patient after you re pot it. Nick
