splitting majesty palm and giant bird of paradise

Question
Hi,
I have two large (9ft. & 12 ft.)giant bird of paradise's in my garden (coastal Texas) and a 12 ft. majesty palm. I am wondering if I can split off the smaller growth from each side of the giant birds of paradise to plant elsewhere. The smaller growths appear to be separate from the main trunk. My majesty palm appears to have two separate trunks coming out of the ground,a primary and an apparrent secondary. Can I split off the secondary to plant elswhere? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Answer
Hi Larry, You need to cut down into the Rhizome (underground root system) and segment a section of it, which contains the part of the crown you want to remove. If you just sever it above ground level, it will not survive, you need to excise it with the roots attached. I would not attempt to do this with the Majesty however, the roots are different and you may compromise the entire palm. Nick
