Bugs on Bird of Paradise

Question
I am having trouble with the blooms on my Bird of Paradise.  It seems that when they start to blossom they have been attacked by I assume bugs.  What can I do to stop this.  I have quite a few of blooms but they all eaten up.  What can I do to get my beautiful blossoms back.

Answer
Hi Myrna, it sounds like slugs, they feed at night hence the absence of them when you see the damage during the day; they hide in the soil during the daylight and come out after dark to do their dastardly deeds! Slug bait around the base of the Bird should help, but they are determined pest. clear all debris from around the base and this will hinder their hiding places. I would say slugs, because I have never heard of anything else that really bothers Birds. regards Nick
