banana palm babies

Question
I planted a banana palm in the spring & it has sent out all these baby plants. Is there a way I can harvest / separate them to give to friends?

Answer
Hi Cindy, yes! but you must wait until they have developed several leaves, so you get a pup with roots attached along with a portion of the corm (underground rhizome); get a long bladed spade and with a quick jab, stab down parallel to the mother and cut the pup away, then dig down and uproot the detached plant. Then its just a matter of finding a new home for your baby, and remember that albeit bananas like a lot of water, when first planted, just enough to keep it irrigated, for it will rot at this stage if you give it what the mother requires.
