Elephant ears and insects

Question
I have just recently bought an elephant ear plant. I was told it could be kept indoors in a sunny location. It's doing well (I assume) but has ALOT of little insects around the base and climbing up the stems. They are clearly visible and I have wiped them off but what are they? I also read this plant can be poisonous to children. How accurate is this and to what degree?

Answer
Hi Tara, oxalic acid and asparagine are in the plant leaf and stem and can cause problems if eaten by children or pets, albeit my pets have never shown an interest in it,but I do not have any children so I can't attest for the attraction there; that said, if you decide to keep the plant, then you will need to repot it in a clean medium, for the existing medium is infested with eggs (hence the repeated insect presence.)>>Nick
