bonzai ponytail palms

Question
my husband bought me what i believe are mini versions of my larger ponytail palms there are 3 in a small ceramic pot.  i have had them since July 08 and they have been doing great flourishing and all kinds of new growth.  i have it on my desk at work, I came in Mon morning and it was beautiful as always but when I came in Tues morning 2 of the 3 bulbs were all mushy and the greenery was brown and falling apart and now the 3rd of the them is doing the same thing, is there anything I can do to save it and can you tell me why this would happen all fo the sudden?

Answer
Hi Deena, Ponytails (be it standard or bonzai..) do not like to have their feet wet, that bulbular bottom acts as a resevoir for water and if the roots are subjected to excessive water, the result is rotted roots and (as you so appropriately put it..) results in mushy and brown growth. Once the roots are damaged, it is only a matter of how badly, if they are too badly damaged, then nothing can be done, if they have any viability left, then they may come back, but it will happen by its own accord, there isn't anything you can do but, leave it be and NO MORE WATER....Nick
