pygmy date double palm leaf chlorosis

Question
I have a pygmy date double palm in a large pot. (had it for 2 or more years). It is looking very poorly. yellowing then browning fronds. Even the new fronds are brown around edges. Does it need repotting or is it deseased? It has only looked bad since Feb. I have tried systemic granules on it with no results.I water it the same as I always have; several times a week. Thank you for your time. Any advice will be appreciated

Answer
Hi Loretta, I am assuming the soil has never been changed out, this is the core of the problem, the roots have become compromised with a compacted soil base with built up salt content from previous fertilizing; change out the soil and I think you will see a wondrous turn of events, make certain you line the bottom with a couple of inches of drainage medium and if need be, purchase a larger container, for the one you have is probably marginal at best, given the time span the Palm has been in it. Containerized plants, Palms or trees need to be changed out periodically, for salt builds up from frequent fertilizing, and the plant begins to decline because of it. After you do this, it will be the new growth that will show healthy, the existing yellowed fronds will eventually brown out and need to be pruned off, but keep them attached for now, for they are still functioning in the yellow stage.
