draceana marginata

Question
My Dracaena plant has 3 stems and was looking beautiful for the last year. all of a sudden the leaves started Turning colors and falling off now that has stopped but the green leaves are starting to fall off. the new leaves in the center that are sprouting are very pale green. i also noticed some black stuff in the one stem where the new leaves sprout and broke the tip of that particular stem off to see how it looked. the stem seems nice and firm and healthy. I live in NJ an was wondering if maybe I'm not watering it enough? or maybe the change of weather...i use the aqua globe to water this plant and refill them every time  they are empty which is maybe once  every two weeks the bottom of the pot has lots of drainage holes ..any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Hi Brandi, you didn't mention how long this plant was in its container, but it sounds like the soil needs to be changed out; it could very well be pot bound and the soil is compacted around the root ball, not allowing water to actually get to the roots before draining off through the bottom holes, I am only speculating here, because the plant is not in front of me, but if you change it out to a larger container, you can't go wrong. place about an inch of drainage medium along the bottom of the new container then fill the rest up with a quality potting soil, like Miracle-Grow. I wouldn't rely on those watering systems they advertise, like the  one you have, just check periodically with your finger, and if the soil is dry halfway down, water at that time, and water well , until moisture shows at the drainage holes, then don't water again until dry halfway down again.
