Rooting A New Bannana Palm

Question
My Banana Palm was leaning and tipping over as I had neglected to repot it with new and more soil.  So, I cut the 7' plant,  and put the one and a half foot plumb it in water.  Is there something more I can do to have the top shoot root?  I want to give my nephew this plant for Christmas.  It was his grandmothers.  Thank you so much for your advice.

Answer
Hi Alexandra, I think I understand what you did, but just in case, you need to take the bottom part, which contains the underground root ball called a Corm, which is a potato like base with fibrous roots coming out of it, and put it back in the container or a larger container with new soil, get it out of the water!!, you will rot it. The top can't be saved, it is just concentric tissue and will not root. Nick
