winterizing tropical plants in Texas

Question
Hi, we put in several banana plants this year along with a windmill palm.  I would like to know the best and easiest way to winterize them for the north Texas area. Thank you.

Answer
I protect mine with a material that is called a frost blanket, it is sold in most box stores like Lowes and Home Depot; this is a cheese cloth type material that needs to be wrapped around your plant to protect it from frost and cold temperatures down to about 30 degrees. Colder temps then that will require covering the root area with a heavy blanket or mulching to protect the root system, for the crown is going to be burned back to soil level , but the roots will survive.
