Pony Tail Palm help

Question
Hello:

I just got my pony tail palm about 1/2 a year ago and never had any problems with it until now. It is in the container it came in; which is a pot with rocks with soil underneath.  I bought this plant from Costco. The leaves are either turning brown or white in color and it doesn't seem to be healthy.  I water it about once a week and I put it in my window sill for afternoons.  I do not know what to do.

Answer
Hi Julie, you are watering it way too much; that bulbular bottom is a reservoir for water, and they need very little additionally. The second problem is it being kept in its original container, which is normally for transient purposes only and not meant to be a permanent one. I feel that if you get a larger container, and line the bottom with a drainage medium, like gravel or small stones, then add new soil, it should recover for you. Watering a Ponytail once a "month" is sufficient. Nick
