Growing fruit on my banana trees

Question
I also cut my banana trees down in the winter after the first hard freeze but I noticed where you said they won't grow fruit if I do this. Please tell me what I should do during the winter and if there is a good fertilizer to use or anything I can do to help my trees produce fruit

Answer
Joe,,,they will produce fruit, but it won't be what I call a significant bunch, it will be a small bunch that I don't condsider worth nurturing; I usually cut a frozen plant off at the Corm (underground rhizome), and let the Corm put its energy into a new pup that is developing, this way the new pup has a better chance at maturing fruit before it too gets hit with a frost or freeze. You didn't mention you climate zone, but here in Southwest Florida, we too get frosts and freezes, (one is taking place right now!). I protect the smaller plants and pups with a product called N-sulate, its a frost protection fabric that will keep the plants it is covering from getting cold stressed, and allowing them to make it through the Winter and into the Spring without getting "burned back" from the low temps. This allows these plants to set fruit the ensuing Summer, before the next bout with Winter. The older, taller ones are pretty much at the mercy of Mother Nature, and as I said, I excise them from the mat if they do in fact get melted from the cold. Nick
