Frozen Queen Palm

Question
Nick, I live in the southernmost part of Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico. Our winters are usually very mild and short and the summers very hot.

This past winter we had about 3 nights of hard freeze, about 18 to 20 degrees. Our Queen Palms suffered and the leaves are brown and I need advise on what to do. If you saw the tops out straight across will they come back and survive?

Thanks,

S%26S

Answer
Hi Sid, no , if you do that you will kill it, its not like a Banana, where new growth will commence, you cut the crown off and it is dead; if there are any green fronds at all, then it has a chance, if not then the odds are its dead anyway. Wait a couple of weeks, if nothing emerges from the center of the crown, then the heart of the palm is gone and the palm is dead. Nick
