alamanda bush

Question
Allamanda planted 4 to 5 years in the ground was doing well until the past 2 months . I am in Central Florida this bush was doing great until  recently now the new growth is curly up like little curly ques is the best way to say the plant is in flower at this time . there has been no change in fertilizers, watering ,pruning etc... these new leaves are smaller in size then what I am accustomed to seeing on a Allamanda     help   I think it is fungal but would like your input
Thank You

Answer
It sounds like thrips (a tiny insect..) are feeding on the new tender growth, spray it down with a Horticultural Oil (there are several brands..),,,the main ingredient in Hort Oil is "Parafine Oil" which suffocates small insects such as Thrips, Aphids, Scale, Mealy Bugs etc...Look for Ultra-Fine Oil, Soluble Oil Spray or Neem Oil,,,any of these will suffice. Apply during the cooler part of the day,,,otherwise it will magnify the heat from the Sun and burn the leaves; apply around 5 pm and let it work overnight,,then in the morning,,,wash it off with your hose, along with the dead insects. I recommend you repeat the next afternoon (PM work overnight and rinse off in the following A.M.)..Nick
