Hi Gary,
I have a large white birch tree in my back yard.  I want to kill the tree without first cutting it down.  i have heard of many methods and am therefore somewhat confused.  What is your best suggestion.  Thank You,

Let me ask the question, why?

It would be much easier AND safer to cut the tree down to remove.  If you were to "kill" the tree first you will run the risk of branches falling on you while removing the tree.  

Removing large trees is not for the homeowner because of the risks and liabilities involved.  I think you should contact a certified arborist in your area and express your desires to remove this tree.
