Tree damage to trunk from chewing dog

Question
I have a 2inch dia. gum tree the 1 yr old boxer chewed the bark from a 12 inch vertical span half way up the trunk. I place 3 concentric wire circles around the trunk and now he chewed a 5 inch patch off my 8 inch sycamore. Any suggestions, other than the obvious.  How can I help the already damaged trees?

Answer
If no more damage is done the trees will recover. Watch for signs (sawdust) of possible borer damage (these are insects that can attack wounds and bore into the tree trunk. You might try mixing up a solution of HOT pepper and water and spraying or painting this on the tree trunks--this should discourage the dog but it will not hurt the tree.
