Japanese Maple, 20 years old,

Question
Several branchs appear to be dead. These branches have a characteristic circular band which is perforated with what appears to be holes in perfect order, as if they done by a machine. My local garden shop says it is a bore miner and they recommend cut the branches off below the aforementioned circular band. Do have any advice? Thanks

Answer
They more than likely think it is a twig girdlier an insect that lays its eggs in the twig and then girdles the twig so it will fall to the ground where the young can hatch out. Cutting the limbs below the girdle and destroying the limbs will control the problem for next year by removing the insect population.
