ROOTS OF OUR 40 YEAR OLD MAPLE TREE

Question

tree2
WILL HEAVY PRUNING OF THE TREE SLOW THE ROOT GROWTH OR ACCELERATE THE ROOT GROWTH?

Answer
Heavy pruning will slow the root growth. BUt if you are thinking to prune the tree to stop or slow the roots from the sidewalk or driveway it will not help in this situation. This tree has established root system and the pruning may slow the growth of slammer roots but not the larger ones. I would not prune if this is the only reason to prune. Maples do not respond well to pruning. Now if there are dead limbs in the tree these can be cut off.
