Transplanting a flowering almond

Question
I had to dig up a small (approx. 3'high) flowering almond last year and had intended to replant it.  It has been in the same small bucket for over a year & it is amazingly healthy.  Even though another expert on your website says the best time to plant flowering almond is in the spring (in light shade to full sun), I'd like to get it in the ground soon so it doesn't have to spend another winter in the bucket!  Would it be ok to plant it this fall and if so, when would be the best time?  Is there a special treatment (food) that you'd recommend to help it survive the move? I live in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Answer
I would wait until spring after the last frost. The next best time is early fall when the leaves on the hardwood tree begin to turn. Dig the hole twice the size of the pot it is in and as deep. Fill with top soil and mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk and water. I would not fertilize it for the first year. Sometimes fertilizer will damage the roots of newly planted trees.
