Fertilizing a Japanese Maple Tree

I would like to know what type of Miracle-gro tree fertilizer spikes are better for a Japanese Maple tree. Should I use the regular tree spikes or the evergreen spikes? I contacted Miracle-Gro twice and got two differnt answers.

Answer
I do not recommend tree spikes since you can easily damage the roots. Fertilize in early spring by punching a series of 1-2 inch holes, 5-6 inches deep, and two feet apart, at the drip line. Fill each hole half way with a good all purpose (10-10-10), slow release plant food. Water thoroughly after feeding. (ALWAYS!)
