Problem with trees

Question

Tree 1
We have 2 trees that are having problems.  Will have to send pics in seperate emails.  There are 2 shots of the first tree.  The 2nd tree is located in a different area of property.  What would be the cause and are they treatable?  The 2nd tree appears dead, as no growth, but want to know for future if other trees show same signs.  Thank you

Answer
Tree 1 has been attacked by an insect called a borer. This insect will bore into the bark and wood and the tree will bled at the wound. Borer damage can be serious and will need to be sprayed with an insecticide called Merit. Check with your local nursery fro this product. Borers usually attack trees under stress so I would recommend that you fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good. Fertilize just before a rain storm and you will not need to water.

Tree 2 I really can not tell what the cause of the death was. Looks to be some type of canker disease maybe Hypoxylon canker. These diseases also infect weakened trees. Fertilizer will help trees that may show some of the same signs also.
