Coral Japanese Maple, dead limb

Question

Dead Coral Japanese Ma
We have a dead limb on our Coral Japanese maple.  There is a black section right below where the limb died off.  I'm going to cut it off but would like to know if what happened to it can be prevented from spreading or recurring.

Answer
Not real sure from your description but it seems to be a canker type disease. Just prune the dead limb off and this will also prune the canker off and the disease will not spread to the rest of the tree. I do not think it will recur any where else on the tree. Remove the branch from the area after it is cut since the canker will contain spores and these could reinfect a wound on the tree. Cut the branch about 1/4 inch from the trunk and the wound will heal over by itself.
