Raywood Ash Dropping a Tacky White Powdery Substance

Question
QUESTION: HI Jim,

Hope you had a nice vacation!

We live in Vacaville, CA about 30 miles west of Sacramento.  Our problem is with the Raywood Ash in our backyard.  This beautiful 20+ year old tree just this year started to 'drop' a very tacky substance on to the deck and walkway below.  There is also a white substance present that can be swept up, but will also stick if left on the surface too long.  Wiping the surfaces down with a damp cloth removes the sticky substance but this is too much to keep up with.

I've climbed up into the tree and did not see and infestation of aphids (like we have with our roses) or beetles, or anything that looked the the tree was under attack.  There were some leaves that did have a cluster of white soft specks underneath.  I might also mention the tree was pruned significantly about 3 years ago but seems to be doing fine from that maintenance.  Any suggestions how to treat this focal point of our yard is appreciated.  The tree is at least 20 years old and stands well above our 2 story home, estimated 20' across, trunk is 58" round.  Just beautiful and I'd hate to lose it.  Thanks.

ANSWER: Since the substance is sticky it does sound like aphids or scales. There are some that are cottony and have a waxy material on their backs that will blow off with the wind. My guess is this is what you are seeing. Since the tree is large it will be almost impossible to spray the tree. I would treat the tree with an insecticide called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control. This is applied to the soil around the tree and the roots will take it to the leaves and twigs killing the insects as they suck the plant juices. It will take a couple of weeks to reach the foliage but will last all season. Here is a web link to this product. Check with your local nursery fro this product. http://www.bayeradvanced.com/product/Tree-Shrub-Insect-Control/concentrate.html

QUESTION: Hi Jim,

I've not been able to find your recommended product, Bayer Tree-Shrub-Insect-Control.  There is a Bayer product, Tree-Shrub-Protect & Feed.  Instructions read about the same as your recommendation, although not as specific about the dilution.  The guy at the store said it's essentially the same thing, but  wanted to get your feedback.

Thanks,

Chris

Answer
Yes sort of--it contains a fertilzier and is usually more expensive than the Bayer Advanced Trre and shrub Insect control product. I would use the liquid product and it should wotk as will. Might check with Home Depot. Lowdes and Orchard Supply Hardware--they advertize that they carry Bayer products.
