Pine tree disease

Question

pine tree disease
the problem is with the long needle pine tree, not sure what kind, maybe scotch pine?  Needles and branches are dying and there is a black substance on the branches, looks almost like mold.  The pics show it somewhat.  I have more pics but apparently I can only upload one.  location is Upstate NY.

Answer
Since you are seeing the black on the needles and twigs it sounds like a scale problem. Scale insect suck the plant juices from the plant and secrete a substance called Honeydew which is sticky--a black sooty mold will grow on this honeydew.

Control the scales and the black goes away. Treat the tree with Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect control. This is applies around the tree and the roots will carry it to the needles and twigs and when the scale insects suck the plant juices they are killed. Check with your local garden type store for this product.
