Weesatch and Mesquite

Question
We are planning to start killing and removing these nasty trees. Is there a best time to do this? We plan to cut them down and place in a pile to burn when we can. We thought we would leave a stump say 2 feet tall so we can keep up with where they were and treat the stump with the chop and squirt method until it is dead. By leaving the stump we can watch for new growth to sprout out and them spray it with either commercial grade roundup (it has worked on the small ones) or the remedy and diesel mixture. Do we have a good plan or do you have some other ideas?
Thanks
Linda

Answer
I would soon after you cut the trees treat the stump with Roundup. You do not have to treat right after the cut but I would do this within a day or so.  Use a paint brush and paint the Roundup from the container on the top of the stumps. I would cut them as low as you can. The hack and squirt works when the foliage is still on the tree--the pressure from the growing leaves will draw the herbicide up to the foliage and down to the roots. When you cut the trees this pressure is reduced and the hack and squirt does not work as well. painting the herbicide on the stump soon after it has been cut will cause the roots to "suck" the herbicide down and kill most of the roots. You may still get a few sprouts but these can be sprayed as they appear.
