Ponderosa Pine damage

Question

Attached is a pic of a ponderosa pine in the Black Hills of SD. Its damage is different than the pine beetle damage. There is no evidence of larva or worms. We haven't a bird spending extensive time in the tree. Appreciate any help you can give.

Answer
These are sap sucker(wood pecker) holes. The bird makes the hole in lines along the trunk or branches of trees and sap will form in the hole. The bird returns to feed on the insect that are attracted to the sap. The birds are hard to discourage. One way is to s[pray the hole with an insecticide and this kills the insect and with not insects to eat the birds get discouraged and leave. Here is a web link to more information on the sap sucker damage.
