Tree boring bees

Question
I live in Prince William County Virginia.  I have a nest of LARGE bees. I call them bees because they have a black and yellow striped body.  They are about 2" in length.  They are boring into/nesting in a beech tree and literally removing chunks of wood at a time.  I tried wasp and hornet spray foam into the nesting hole but I think they enjoyed the refreshment.  No change in status, the spray appears to have had no effect. Can you tell me what they might be and any method of eradication.

Thank you.

Answer
Sounds like the giant Hornet. Here is a web link to this insect. http://www.masterbeekeeper.org/stinging/gianthornet.htm

I have found that using the foaming kind of hornet spray works well since the foam is around the entrance hole and when the hornets come and go they get the insecticide on them and die. I use the one from Bengal http://www.bengal.com/waspshornets.html
Used it last week and worked great.
