QUESTION: I FOUND A ROUND,LARGE,HEAVY SOFT GROWTH ON A DEAD OAK TREE STUMP CLOSE TO A CREEK. OBLONG SHAPE, WHITE WITH ORANGE TINT - HAS THICK HAIRLIKE STRUCTURES COVERING THE TOP AND SIDES WHERE IT WASN'T ATTACHED TO THE STUMP. REMINDS ME OF THOSE CUTE PETS THAT MULTIPLIED ON THE ENTERPRISE ORIGINAL SERIES AND ENDED UP ALL OVER THE SHIP. HAIRLIKE STRUCTURES ARE ABOUT 1/2 INCH LONG AND FURLIKE. CAN YOU I.D. - I LIVE IN NE GA..

ANSWER: It is one of the decay fungi. IF you can attach a picture I should be able to ID the species of fungi.

Looks like the Bearded tooth fungi. It is sometimes called Lion's Mane Mushroom, Bearded Tooth Mushroom, Hedgehog Mushroom, Satyr's Beard, Bearded Hedgehog Mushroom, pom pom mushroom, or Bearded Tooth Fungus
